Professor Kim Deokmo of Honam University Appointed as the 18th President of the Korean Political Communication Association
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Gwan-woo] Honam University announced that Professor Kim Deok-mo (57) of the Department of Journalism and Broadcasting will be inaugurated as the 18th president at the Korean Political Communication Association's second half regular academic conference to be held online on the 19th.
Professor Kim graduated from the Department of Journalism and Broadcasting at Sungkyunkwan University and earned his master's and doctoral degrees through research in communication theory and journalism.
He served as a research fellow at the Korea Press Foundation (formerly Korea Press Research Institute) and has been a professor at Honam University since 1998. He also conducted research as a visiting scholar at Cleveland State University and as a visiting professor at the University of Iowa.
Additionally, he has held various positions including Chair of the Academic Conference Organizing Committee of the Korean Society for Journalism and Communication Studies, Director of the Korean Broadcasting Society, Vice President of the Korean Communication Association, Special Member of the Broadcasting and Communications Review Committee for News and Culture, Member of the Regional Newspaper Development Committee, Member of the Press Arbitration Commission, and Policy Advisor to the Local Autonomy Development Committee. Through these roles, he has actively engaged in research and policy advisory activities on the relationship between democracy and media.
Before his inauguration, Professor Kim expressed his ambition, stating, "I will strive to promote research that responds to the changes in the new media environment in the untact new normal era and to lead the association's role in restoring the essence of journalism in the era of media politics."
He added, "The Political Communication Association will also focus on civic political socialization education and work to foster mature democratic citizenship education and a sound culture of debate for the development of democracy."
He emphasized the importance of the association's activities in overcoming the current issues of media political bias, securing the independence of the press, and restoring the essence of journalism (objective reporting based on facts) to eradicate fake news that harms citizens.

He also promised to expand support for the next generation of scholars (early-career researchers, graduate students, etc.) and to provide equal opportunities for association members to participate in academic conferences and seminars.
