[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Junho] A national science museum will be established in Gangwon-do. The government will invest a total of 40 billion KRW to build the science museum to reduce the gap in scientific and cultural life for local residents.
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 17th that it will begin the "Planning for the Construction of a National Science Museum Specialized in Life and Medical Fields in Gangwon-do."
This science museum will be specialized in the life and medical fields and will be medium-sized according to the standards of the American Association of Science Museums. The total project cost is around 40 billion KRW, and the museum will be established using the former US military Camp Long site in Wonju, which was returned. Gangwon-do currently plans to develop this site into a cultural and sports park, and the science museum is expected to become the core facility of the park.
The government plans to develop this science museum through various procedures such as public contests as a third-generation science museum centered on advanced science education and regional culture and communication, a specialized science museum focused on life and medical fields, and a science museum considering expandability.

Kang Sang-wook, Director of the Future Talent Policy Bureau at the Ministry of Science and ICT, who oversees this project, said, "Gangwon-do has been a region lacking scientific and cultural infrastructure, and with the aspirations of Wonju citizens and Gangwon residents, the Ministry of Science and ICT, Gangwon-do, and Wonju City are working together to promote this project." He added, "We plan to broadly collect opinions from experts in various fields and citizens so that the specialized science museum in life and medical fields can activate science education for future generations and serve as a bridge between civil society and the scientific community."
