Hamyang-gun, Severe Cold Wave Expected This Winter... Thorough Preparations for Heavy Snow and Cold Wave
Operation of Situation Room for On-site Response and Rapid Deployment of Equipment and Personnel until March 15 Next Year
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] Hamyang-gun, Gyeongnam Province announced on the 17th that it will operate a situation room until March 2021 to quickly mobilize equipment and personnel for on-site response in order to minimize agricultural disaster damage during the winter season.
In the past three years, weather warnings issued in Hamyang-gun included 5 heavy snow alerts and 8 cold wave alerts. The county suffered significant crop damage due to heavy snow in 2018 and low temperatures in 2019-2020.
The Korea Meteorological Administration forecasts that this winter's temperature will be similar to or higher than the average (0.6℃), but temperatures may drop sharply when the cold continental high-pressure system expands. Precipitation is expected to be similar to or less than the average (67.7~97.3mm).
The county will operate a winter disaster countermeasure situation room, led by the head of the Agricultural Technology Center, to minimize damage to crops, vinyl greenhouses, livestock barns caused by heavy snow, and cold damage to crops due to cold waves and abnormal low temperatures from January to April.
The situation room, composed of 20 members in 3 teams, plans to minimize disaster damage through strategies including establishing and operating a situation management system, forecasting agricultural disasters in advance, proactive response to weather disasters, and building a cooperative system with related organizations.
Jung Soon-woo, head of the Agriculture and Livestock Division, stated, "By establishing and operating a rapid disaster response system, we will protect the property and safety of residents from unexpected disasters."
