Mokpo National University Institute of Library and Culture Studies Receives Commendation from the Cultural Heritage Administration Commissioner

View original image[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Seo Young-seo] The Institute of Island Culture at Mokpo National University (President Park Min-seo), led by Director Hong Seok-jun, announced on the 15th that it received a commendation from the Cultural Heritage Administration on the 14th in recognition of its contributions to the development of the National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage and the understanding, management, and protection of maritime cultural heritage, commemorating the 26th anniversary of the institute's establishment.
Founded in 1983, the Institute of Island Culture has been leading research on domestic and international islands and maritime culture, practicing interdisciplinary research across various academic fields.
Since 2012, it has actively engaged in research and academic exchanges related to islands and maritime culture with the National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage, including the 'National Maritime Culture Scholars Conference.'
Director Hong Seok-jun stated, “Taking this commendation as an opportunity, we plan to further develop academic exchanges and cooperation through research and survey activities related to domestic and international island and maritime cultural heritage together with the National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage.”
Currently conducting the Humanities Korea Plus (HK+) project, the Institute of Island Culture publishes academic journals such as ‘島嶼文化’ and the international English journal (Scopus) ‘Journal of Marine and Island Cultures,’ as well as academic series, data series, popular reading series, and series on island living tools.
It also hosts various domestic and international academic conferences, including the ‘National Maritime Culture Scholars Conference’ and the ‘East Asia Island Maritime Culture Forum,’ and operates the country's first graduate program in Island and Maritime Cultural Studies.
