[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Chae Hyun-il) announced the voting results for the ‘Yeongdeungpo Top 10 News,’ which selected the major projects that received the greatest love from residents throughout 2020.
The purpose was to create an opportunity for empathy and communication regarding district administration by having residents and staff jointly select the top 10 news items that led to happy changes in residents’ lives among the major projects promoted this year.
Accordingly, voting was conducted for 11 days from November 30 to December 10 through the district website and the exclusive portal system for public officials, allowing each participant to vote for up to three projects.
To ensure fair selection across a wide range of fields, 25 candidate projects were pre-selected based on recommendations of major projects from each department, focusing on projects that received intensive media coverage or were introduced as best practices, news that greatly impacted residents’ lives, and projects closely related to regional development.
The voting results showed a total participation of 13,068 people with 38,038 votes cast, which is 10.8 times higher than last year, demonstrating the high interest and participation of residents and related public officials in the voting.
The number one project among the Yeongdeungpo-gu Top 10 News that shone throughout 2020 was the ‘Promotion of Public Housing Project in Yeongdeungpo Jjokbangchon (Goshiwon Village).’
The public housing project in Jjokbangchon received a total of 4,856 votes (12.8%), clearly showing residents’ hopes and expectations for the redevelopment and urban regeneration improvement projects in the Jjokbangchon area.
Following in second place was the ‘Creation of a Pedestrian-Friendly Street Linked to Yeongjung-ro’ project, which received 4,535 votes (11.9%).
This project is an extension of the Yeongjung-ro pedestrian environment improvement project, including the creation of walkable pedestrian streets around Yeongdeungpo Agricultural and Marine Products Market and Daerim Central Market, as well as signboard improvements on Yeongdeungpo-ro.
In third place was the ‘Initiation of Redevelopment of the Sex Trade District (Jipchangchon) in front of Yeongdeungpo Station,’ which received 4,508 votes (11.9%). This redevelopment project for the aging and vulnerable area around Yeongdeungpo Station, a long-standing wish of 380,000 Yeongdeungpo residents, plans to build a mixed-use residential complex of about 1,500 households, aiming to realize inclusive housing welfare that embraces not only local residents but also socially vulnerable groups.
Additionally, COVID-19 related policies received high responses from residents. The 4th place ‘Proactive COVID-19 Testing and Introduction of Walk-Through’ (3,817 votes, 10%) and 5th place ‘Issuance of Yeongdeungpo Love Gift Certificates (35 billion KRW)’ (1,911 votes, 5%) ranked high among the top 10 news, reflecting residents’ high evaluation of the district’s prioritization of life and safety through proactive preventive measures, thorough quarantine, and efforts to revitalize local markets and the regional economy.
Other projects following were ▲6th place One-Stop Integrated Civil Service Office Installation ▲7th place Creation of Anyangcheon Comprehensive Sports Belt ▲8th place Expansion of Parking Lots on Idle Land ▲9th place Environmental Improvement of Central Street Vendors in Yeongdeungpo Traditional Market ▲10th place Creation of Fine Dust Safe Zones.
Moreover, despite difficulties in project promotion due to the spread of COVID-19 this year, the district was evaluated to have achieved remarkable results in various fields, matching the vigorous steps toward realizing ‘Together with Residents! A Better Future, an Open Yeongdeungpo.’
