Kolon Glotech Targets Antibacterial and Antiviral Material Market
Development of Antibacterial Fiber Material 'Q-PLUS (Q-Plus)'
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Kolon Glotech is targeting the antimicrobial material market with the antiviral fiber material 'Q+ (Q-PLUS, Q-Plus)'. Q-Plus is the brand name of a functional antimicrobial material developed by Kolon Glotech, characterized by its excellent ability to block various viruses such as influenza and avian flu, in addition to its antimicrobial and antifungal functions.
Q-Plus is a functional material that applies copper sulfide (CuS), a harmless inorganic antimicrobial agent, to fibers such as nylon and polyester, providing the ability to block and eliminate 99.99% of various bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Since 2015, Kolon Glotech has been dedicated to research and development to add antiviral functions that block various viruses to existing antimicrobial materials. After more than five years of effort, they succeeded in developing a new process and recently launched Q-Plus with antiviral functions. It is currently applied to health masks, and HEPA filters made from Q-Plus material have been adopted in air purifier products sold domestically, gaining recognition in the related industry. Additionally, Kolon Glotech plans to accelerate the expansion of its product lineup by applying Q-Plus to automotive interior products it manufactures, such as car seats and synthetic leather.
In November, Kolon Glotech proved the antiviral efficacy of Q-Plus against various viruses through antiviral tests conducted with Yonsei University College of Medicine, a leading virus research institution. In the test, when viruses such as influenza and avian flu were introduced to Q-Plus applied products containing copper, 99.99% of the viruses were eliminated within five minutes. Furthermore, they have commissioned the U.S. FDA-certified testing agency (Microchem Laboratory) to conduct antiviral tests of Q-Plus against COVID-19, which are currently underway, with plans to verify antiviral efficacy against COVID-19 early next year.
