[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] Following last year, coal and briquette prices will remain frozen this year as well.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on the 15th through a notice on the designation of maximum sales prices for anthracite coal and briquettes that domestic coal and briquette prices will be frozen.
According to this year's government-notified prices, coal (grade 4 standard) is 186,540 KRW per ton, and briquettes (factory price standard) are 639 KRW per piece.
The Ministry explained, "Considering the heating cost burden on low-income households comprehensively, we decided to freeze prices this year as we did last year."
Support for low-income groups such as briquette coupons will be increased compared to last year.
The amount of briquette coupon support per household will increase from 406,000 KRW last year to 472,000 KRW this year.
For low-income households using briquettes who wish to switch fuels, support for boiler replacement and insulation installation will continue.
