The Foundation for Becoming a Manufacturing Powerhouse in AI, First Step of the World's Best AI Manufacturing Platform

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jong-hwa] The 'Artificial Intelligence Manufacturing Platform (KAMP, Korea AI Manufacturing Platform),' a core device for the advancement of smart factories, is officially launching.

On the 14th, the Ministry of SMEs and Startups held the 'Artificial Intelligence Manufacturing Platform (KAMP) Service Portal Opening Ceremony' at KAIST in Daejeon, introducing its main functions and content, and demonstrating the process of analyzing actual smart factory data using artificial intelligence.

In July, the Ministry announced a plan to build KAMP based on private cloud through the 'AI and Data-Based SME Manufacturing Innovation Advancement Strategy,' aiming to advance smart factories centered on data and artificial intelligence.

KAMP is a comprehensive platform that supports the AI transformation of small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises by gathering in one place data storage and analysis infrastructure, AI development and utilization tools, AI datasets and standard models, commercialized AI manufacturing services, expert consulting, and educational services that are difficult for SMEs to establish on their own.

Since September, top cloud, AI, and software specialized organizations such as NHN, KT, KAIST, IBLab, T3Q, Skoinfo, and MI Cube Solution have participated in building KAMP. The cloud system construction has already been completed, and since November, high-performance computing resources such as Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) and data storage space have been provided free of charge to companies participating in AI solution demonstration projects and smart factory construction support projects.

With the opening of the service portal, KAMP can now offer various services beyond existing infrastructure services, including AI analysis tools, datasets and standard models, benchmarking cases (Use-Cases), and online education.

The main services of KAMP include AI training datasets and analysis models for 12 core pieces of equipment widely used in SMEs such as Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines and injection molding machines, AI utilization benchmarking cases for small and medium manufacturers, step-by-step online lectures from smart factory concepts to AI and data utilization, and instructions on how to apply for cloud infrastructure.

During the demonstration, the process of inspecting product defects using KAMP’s AI analysis tools was showcased. Actual production data from Chosun Refractories Co., Ltd., located in Gwangyang-si, Jeollanam-do, was used. The process proceeded in the order of uploading training data, AI training and analysis model creation, uploading actual production data, executing the AI analysis model, and confirming the analysis results. The Minister of SMEs and Startups personally participated in the AI model creation stage.

Even those without expert knowledge could easily and quickly create AI models with simple mouse operations, and the final analysis accurately determined whether the product was defective.

Shin Sung-chul, President of KAIST, who led the development of the KAMP service portal, said, "The functions and content of the service portal will continue to be added and supplemented reflecting the demands of SMEs," adding, "KAIST’s Manufacturing AI Big Data Center, AI Graduate School, Department of Industrial Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering, and Department of Computer Science will collaborate to provide full support so that KAMP can become the world’s best AI manufacturing platform."

Park Young-sun, Minister of SMEs and Startups, stated, "KAMP is still in its early stages," and added, "From the second half of next year, we plan to operate a solution store where manufacturing companies can select and utilize various AI manufacturing solutions to actively expand AI manufacturing." She further said, "We will establish a My Manufacturing Data system where manufacturing data is shared and traded according to agreed protocols among KAMP participants, and profits are fairly distributed, thereby opening the era of protocol economy."
