Jeju Minyo History, Musical and Cultural Characteristics, Values, and Transmission Contents Included
On the 14th, the National Intangible Heritage Center announced the publication of "National Intangible Cultural Property No. 95 Jeju Minyo," which contains the history, musical and cultural characteristics, values, and transmission contents of Jeju folk songs. This book was produced as part of a documentation project for the stable preservation, investigation, and research of national intangible cultural properties. It explains the overall status and characteristics of Jeju Minyo and examines the transmission patterns and features centered on the labor song "??re??neun sori (sound of a millstone grinding)" and the vocal play songs "Sancheon Chomok," "Bongjiga," and "Odolttoki." An official stated, "It comprehensively covers the folk culture that reflects the community culture, lifestyle, seasonal customs, rituals and ceremonies, and values of Jeju society." The book includes verified materials and photos from transmission sites for easy and accurate understanding. Standard language notation and interpretation of dialects are also organized. It contains the designation process of Jeju Minyo as a national intangible cultural property, activities of the Jeju Minyo Preservation Society, and musical scores transcribed from transmitters, making it a fundamental resource for folk song and Korean language research. The book will be distributed to national and public libraries and museums. It can also be purchased at major bookstores or online.
