As daily life comes to a halt and social distancing continues tediously, children eagerly awaiting Christmas are filled with worry. They fear they might not receive the long-awaited gifts from Santa.
Hwang Ji-seon, an official at Yangcheon District Office, is a mother of three daughters aged 6, 8, and 10. While organizing her children's drawings at home, she smiled quietly upon seeing their artwork.
The drawings expressed concerns that Santa and everyone on Earth might become COVID-19 positive during the gift delivery process, and a cute wish that COVID-19 would disappear before Christmas so they could receive smartphone gifts.
Recently, an online community has been circulating the saying, "This year, Santa will come not on December 25 but on January 9." This is because if Santa arrives on the early morning of the 25th, he would need to quarantine for two weeks before being able to move around. This is why children who have been good all year and waiting for Santa feel gloomy.
Hwang shared these drawings with the public relations staff. She thought that conveying the message to follow quarantine rules along with the children's worries about this year's Christmas, when even Santa Claus cannot move freely, might be more effective.
Hwang reassured her children by saying, "Santa also wears a mask, scans QR codes, checks his temperature, and goes around delivering gifts, so it’s okay," but she felt that the greatest gift amid the year-long COVID-19 situation would be "the ordinary daily life as before."
The public relations team decided to post these drawings on the district’s official SNS. They plan to deliver a message urging compliance with quarantine rules to prevent further spread of COVID-19 during year-end and New Year gatherings, and to protect each other's Christmas in this COVID-19 era.
