Alleyway Regeneration in Seongan-ro 31-gil, Cheonho 3-dong, Gangdong-gu and Gucheonmyeon-ro 100-gil, Sangil-dong Area
22 Billion KRW Invested Over 3 Years... Improving Residential Environment and Revitalizing Economy Through Gangdong-Type Urban Regeneration Project Tailored to Local Conditions
[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon) is promoting an alleyway regeneration project in the alleys around Seongan-ro 31-gil in Cheonho 3-dong and Gucheonmyeon-ro 100-gil in Sangil-dong, which were selected for the second half of 2020 Seoul Alleyway Regeneration Project.
A total of 15 autonomous districts applied for 18 project sites in this 'Seoul-style Alleyway Regeneration Project' contest, and among the districts that applied for two sites, Gangdong-gu was the only one to have all its applications selected.
The 'Seoul-style Alleyway Regeneration Project' is a small-scale regeneration project focused on alley units, unlike the existing urban regeneration projects that regenerate large-scale units such as urban regeneration activation areas.
From the planning stage to project completion, opinions from residents and experts are collected and planned, so the effect is expected to be even greater through customized alleyway regeneration.
A total of 2.2 billion KRW will be invested over three years for the project.
Major projects in Cheonho 3-dong include maintenance of roads, walls, gates, expansion of CCTV and maintenance of security windows, installation of parcel boxes for gate use, creation of alley flower beds, and resident rest areas to improve the residential environment.
In Sangil-dong, the plan is to improve the alley environment by maintaining aging facilities such as roads, parks, and signboards, installing landscape lighting, creating unique alley cultural contents such as food festivals and night markets, and thereby restoring the alley commercial district to revitalize the local economy. The project will be implemented from 2021 to 2023.

An official from Gangdong-gu Office said, "Compared to existing urban regeneration projects, we plan to promote a Gangdong-style urban regeneration project tailored to the characteristics of the Gangdong-gu area so that residents can feel it more directly. Through small-scale alleyway regeneration projects, we will confirm the potential for regional development, expand the scope to adjacent areas, and strive to establish a foundation for larger-scale urban regeneration projects such as New Deal projects."
