Non-face-to-face Learning Gains Attention Due to COVID-19... U+ Aideul Saengsaeng Library Approaching 4 Million Views
[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] LG Uplus announced on the 13th that the mobile educational application 'U+ Kids Live Library,' which allows children to enjoy content such as fairy tales, nature observation, and science in 3D augmented reality (AR), is approaching 4 million views.
This is due to the continued spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), which has brought attention to non-face-to-face learning as a supplement to in-person learning at schools and academies.
Launched in January, U+ Kids Live Library is one of the representative edutech services combining education and information communication technology. It has partnered with 24 globally renowned children's book publishers such as 'DK,' 'Penguin Random House,' and 'Oxford' to produce and exclusively provide over 280 English books in 3D AR.
It is characterized by a menu structure categorized according to the book content so that children aged 5 to 9, who are starting to learn English seriously, can conveniently use various content. It also allows children to select books according to their level, from the beginning stages of learning the alphabet to those who can read English books.
When U+ Kids Live Library was launched in January, the number of views was about 10,000, but due to the spread of online education and non-face-to-face culture caused by COVID-19, the cumulative number of views surpassed about 3.5 million by the end of November.
In particular, comparing the number of views for one month before and after August 23, when nationwide 'social distancing' level 2 was implemented, the number of views increased by about 20% after level 2 social distancing, and on weekdays, the number of views increased by about 30%.
The content that is very popular in U+ Kids Live Library includes Pororo learning books and science books where children can vividly enjoy and read about animals and insects. Additionally, highly interactive play-learning activities such as English word matching and character drawing linked to the books are receiving great responses.
An LG Uplus official said, "Since June, the monthly number of views for U+ Kids Live Library has exceeded 500,000," adding, "At this rate, the cumulative number of views is expected to easily surpass 4 million within the year."
LG Uplus plans to continuously expand the 3D AR content of U+ Kids Live Library by 10 to 15 titles every month, increasing the total to 300 titles within the year. They also plan to strengthen personalized recommendations and reading habit management functions.
The monthly subscription fee for this service is 5,500 KRW (including VAT). It is available to both LTE and 5G smartphone customers, and is provided free of charge to kids phone subscribers and U+ 5G premium plan subscribers.
