Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju, Receives Minister of the Interior and Safety Award for Supporting Foreign Residents
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Gwan-woo] Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 10th that it received the Minister's Award at the 'Local Government Foreign Resident Support Best Practice Presentation Contest' held on the 9th via an online video conference hosted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.
Prior to this contest, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety conducted first and second rounds of document screening and a public vote on Gwanghwamun 1st Street among 48 local governments nationwide that created excellent cases in foreign resident settlement, social participation, and awareness improvement.
In April, when a two-week self-quarantine was mandated for inbound travelers due to the overseas spread of COVID-19, Gwangsan-gu quickly organized a multilingual interpretation team of 34 members from 13 countries.
The multilingual interpretation team provided 1:1 monitoring interpretation support for foreign self-quarantined individuals, translated 145 documents including quarantine notices, and conducted campaigns distributing foreign language quarantine guidelines, striving to eliminate blind spots in quarantine measures.
Notably, despite being home to over 23,000 foreign residents, the district achieved zero confirmed foreign COVID-19 cases.
Some in the local community evaluate that the efforts of the multilingual interpretation team played a significant role in this achievement.
