Minsaeng Party Gwangju Branch "Welcome the Passage of 3 Laws Related to 5·18 in the National Assembly"
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Minsaengdang Gwangju Metropolitan City Party has expressed its welcome for the passage of the three 5·18-related laws in the National Assembly plenary session.
On the 10th, the Minsaengdang Gwangju City Party issued a press release stating, “Along with the 5·18 History Distortion Punishment Act, the amendment bills for the 5·18 Truth Investigation Act and the 5·18 Democratic Merit Honor Act have passed the plenary session,” adding, “At last, the minimum legal foundation to prevent distortion and disparagement of the 5·18 event has been established.”
They continued, “For the past 40 years, the deceased, bereaved families, and merit recipients of 5·18 have suffered from numerous falsehoods, distorted slanders, and disparaging actions,” and said, “Now, at least legally, these can be stopped.”
Furthermore, they said, “We hope that the still unrevealed truths of 5·18 will be uncovered in more detail,” emphasizing, “The contributions of the merit recipients and bereaved families to the democratization of the Republic of Korea will be properly honored, and a foundation for appropriate welfare support will be established.”

However, they explained, “During the National Assembly’s deliberation process, the clause that would punish acts of denying, slandering, distorting, or fabricating 5·18 itself was deleted,” adding, “There remains a limitation in that acts denying 5·18 cannot be directly punished, which is a regrettable point and a task to be supplemented in the future.”
