Korea Airports Corporation Exhibits World's First UAM Takeoff and Landing Hub Design Proposal
Exhibition of Aircraft Model Developed by Hanwha Systems
[Asia Economy Reporter Yu Je-hoon] Korea Airports Corporation has unveiled the world's first design plan for a hub for takeoff and landing sites of urban air mobility (UAM), a type of urban air taxi. On the 10th, Korea Airports Corporation announced that it will exhibit the UAM takeoff and landing hub design plan and aircraft model on the 3rd floor of the domestic terminal at Gimpo International Airport in Gangseo-gu, Seoul, until January next year.
UAM refers to urban air mobility using electric vertical takeoff and landing small aircraft (eVTOL), a transportation system gaining attention as a future alternative for urban transportation. In particular, the global UAM market is expected to expand to approximately 731 trillion won by around 2040, with over 100 domestic and international companies competing to develop aircraft and takeoff and landing sites to secure market dominance.
Korea Airports Corporation is also participating in the 'UAM Team Korea,' established last June with the government aiming for pilot commercialization by 2025, and is focusing on developing UAM takeoff and landing infrastructure and charging systems as an airport operation group.
Accordingly, Korea Airports Corporation signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Hanwha Systems in July to divide responsibilities, with the corporation handling the construction and operation of UAM takeoff and landing sites, and Hanwha Systems taking charge of aircraft development and navigation traffic technology development, advancing technological development.
