Namdo Gugakwon Holds Invitation Performance with Jindo Manka and Jindo Dasiraegi Preservation Society
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Hyun] The National Namdo Gugak Center is presenting the Namdo Arts Series through the December Friday Gugak Sympathy. On the 11th at 7 PM, the National Namdo Gugak Center announced on the 9th that it will showcase Jindo Dasiraegi, National Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 81, and Jindo Manga, Jeollanam-do Designated Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 19, at Jinakdang Hall.
Jindo Dasiraegi is a song and storytelling performance held on the night before a funeral to pray for the deceased’s rebirth in paradise and to comfort the bereaved family and mourners.
It carries the meaning of a play waiting for the time when the deceased’s spirit stays at home and then departs, and it is a unique folk performance that sublimates sorrow into laughter by making bold jokes in a sad situation.
Jindo Dasiraegi will be performed by members of the Dasiraegi Preservation Society centered around the holder of the artistic skill Kang Junseop, presenting a profound stage. Meanwhile, Jindo Manga refers to the funeral song sung while carrying the bier to the burial site the morning after the Dasiraegi ends at a funeral house.
Jindo Manga became widely known after winning the Minister of Culture and Tourism Award, the highest prize in the folk song category, at the 19th National Folk Arts Competition held in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, in 1962.
Especially, it has been passed down mainly in Inji-ri Village, Jisan-myeon, in the southwestern region of Jindo, and is evaluated as a sound with the most refined musical beauty and artistry. It is expected that through this performance, audiences will be able to appreciate the deep and distinctive unique sound of Jindo.
The National Namdo Gugak Center strictly adheres to social distancing guidelines during performances, such as temperature checks before the show, mandatory mask-wearing for all attendees, and spaced seating, to ensure a safe Gugak performance in preparation for the risk of COVID-19 resurgence.
Friday Gugak Sympathy is free to attend, and under social distancing level 2, only 30% of the venue’s capacity is allowed, with 130 seats available on a first-come, first-served basis through advance reservation.
A free shuttle bus will operate before and after the performance between Jindo town and the Gugak Center to assist audience convenience. Detailed information about the performance can be obtained from the National Namdo Gugak Center website or the Music Department.
