Emart, Janghee, Geumsil, and Kingsberry Premium Strawberry Discount Event
[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] Emart will hold its first strawberry event of the winter, offering a 20% discount on premium strawberries for one week starting from the 10th.
Featured products include 'Sancheong Janghee Strawberries (Large, Special, Extra Large)' priced at a discounted 18,320 KRW to 22,320 KRW, 'Geumsil Strawberries (700g)' at a discounted 12,720 KRW, and 'Kingsberry Strawberries (6-8 pieces)' at a discounted 14,320 KRW.
Janghee, Geumsil, and Kingsberry strawberries are premium strawberries cultivated by excellent farms in famous strawberry-producing regions such as Sancheong, Jinju, and Nonsan, and are evaluated to have superior quality in terms of size, sweetness, and firmness.
Notably, Kingsberry strawberries are characterized by being 2 to 3 times larger than regular strawberries with soft flesh, while Janghee strawberries are known for having less sourness and a strong, smooth sweetness.
To present high-quality strawberries that match these standards, Emart operates exclusive farming groups for some varieties and strives to manage quality and stabilize supply.
The reason Emart prepared the premium strawberry event is that the popularity of strawberries as a winter fruit is increasing day by day, and with growing demand for premium strawberries, the strawberry market is diversifying.
Although premium strawberries are priced higher than regular ones, consumers seeking better taste and quality are increasing, and Emart is expanding customer choices by offering various strawberry varieties targeting this demand.
According to Emart's annual fruit sales over the past three years, the ranking of strawberry sales within fruits rose two places from 5th to 3rd in 2019 due to the diversification of premium strawberry varieties.
In particular, analyzing Emart's fruit sales in December 2019 shows that strawberries grew about 10% compared to December of the previous year, surpassing tangerines for the first time to become the top-selling fruit, demonstrating their great popularity. From December 1 to 6 this year, strawberry sales also increased by 22% compared to the previous year, indicating a growing number of customers seeking strawberries.
Along with this, premium strawberry sales have continued strong growth this year following last year. Premium strawberry sales increased by 6.9% last year and rose 17.8% this year (January 1 to December 6). The proportion of premium strawberries in total strawberry sales also jumped significantly from about 18% during the same period last year to 26% this year (January 1 to December 6).
In response to the rising consumer preference for premium strawberries, Emart plans to expand its premium strawberry operations this year as it did last year and continue to strengthen its fresh food competitiveness.
Additionally, Emart is continuously working to introduce new strawberry varieties and is collaborating with local farming groups to launch new varieties such as 'Merry Queen' early next year.
