Selected Recipients of the Republic of Korea Engineer Award for December 2020
[Asia Economy Reporter Junho Hwang] Taein Jang, Senior Researcher at POSCO Co., Ltd., and Youngyeop Yoon, Executive Director at Viewon Co., Ltd., were selected as the December recipients of the Korea Engineer Award on the 7th. The Ministry of Science and ICT, along with them, also selected three female engineers as December’s Korea Engineer Award winners.
The Korea Engineer Award is a system that encourages technological innovation in the industrial field and fosters a culture that values engineers by selecting one engineer each from large corporations and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) every month, awarding them the Minister of Science and ICT Award and a prize of 7 million KRW.
Taein Jang, the large corporation awardee and Senior Researcher at POSCO Co., Ltd., was recognized for his contribution to the growth of Korea’s materials and components industry by developing AI-based automated plating thickness control technology that reduces plating thickness variation and improves the quality of steel sheets for automobiles and home appliances.
Youngyeop Yoon, the SME awardee and Executive Director at Viewon Co., Ltd., was highly evaluated for his contribution to the advancement of intelligent factory foundational technologies in the Fourth Industrial Revolution by developing a high-gloss surface inspection device through the convergence of AI and optical technology, significantly improving the productivity of secondary batteries.
Three Female Engineers Selected
The female category winners of the Korea Engineer Award for the second half of the year were Jihae Cha, Senior Engineer at Samsung Heavy Industries Co., Ltd., Eungseon Lee, Director at Withtech Co., Ltd., and Yoonjung Heo, Team Leader at HCT Co., Ltd. The government selects three female engineers each half-year, totaling six annually (three from large corporations and three from SMEs), to foster female engineers.
Jihae Cha, Senior Engineer at Samsung Heavy Industries Co., Ltd., received the award in recognition of her contribution to Korea’s ship order competitiveness by developing a world-class intelligent ship solution with differentiated design and construction capabilities.
Eungseon Lee, Director at Withtech Co., Ltd., was recognized for her contribution to the advancement of domestic environmental measurement technology by significantly reducing measurement time through the development of automatic measurement equipment for chimney emission pollutants.

Yoonjung Heo, Team Leader at HCT Co., Ltd., contributed to the activation of domestic testing and certification services by establishing Korea’s first testing and certification infrastructure through standard research on the electromagnetic wave human harm test of 5th generation (5G) mobile communication technology, reducing testing time and costs by more than 50% compared to overseas testing institutions.
