GC Green Cross Plasma Treatment, First Fully Recovered Patient Reported in Korea
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] A man in his 70s with severe COVID-19 who received GC Green Cross's novel coronavirus plasma treatment 'GC5131A' has been declared fully recovered. This is the first case in South Korea.
According to GC Green Cross on the 7th, a man in his 70s who was confirmed positive for COVID-19 last September was declared fully recovered after receiving GC Green Cross's plasma treatment at Chilgok Kyungpook National University Hospital.
After testing positive for COVID-19 and being hospitalized, the patient’s condition worsened to severe respiratory difficulty during treatment. He was prescribed antiviral drug Remdesivir and steroid Dexamethasone, but showed no improvement.
The medical staff then administered GC Green Cross's plasma treatment GC5131A, which is currently in clinical trials, for about 20 days under the compassionate use approval system. The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety operates this system to allow the use of unapproved clinical trial drugs for patients with no other treatment options or life-threatening severe conditions. As a result, symptoms such as fever improved, and the patient tested negative on the 18th of last month.
GC Green Cross's plasma treatment has been increasingly approved for compassionate use in medical settings, starting with Chilgok Kyungpook National University Hospital in October. Currently, a total of 13 compassionate use approvals have been obtained.
