Differences Arise in Content Investment and Compliance with Broadcasting Laws
[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] In the terrestrial broadcasting evaluation conducted by the Korea Communications Commission, MBC ranked first, and JTBC took the top spot among general programming cable channels. Among multiple system operators (MSOs), LG Hello received the highest score.
On the 2nd, the KCC approved the results of the '2019 Broadcasting Evaluation' containing these details. The evaluation covered terrestrial, radio, and satellite broadcasting over the past year.
In the terrestrial TV evaluation with a perfect score of 700 points, MBC scored the highest with 577 points, followed by KBS1 with 563 points, SBS with 505 points, and KBS2 with 483 points. For general programming cable channels with a perfect score of 600 points, JTBC scored the highest with 494 points, followed by Chosun Broadcasting (TV Chosun) with 486 points, Channel A with 484 points, and Maeil Broadcasting Network (MBN) with 452 points. For news-specialized PP, YTN scored 422 points, and Yonhap News TV received 382 points.
A KCC official explained, "In the case of terrestrial and general programming cable channels, differences in evaluation scores among operators were caused by program award achievements, children's program scheduling, compliance with broadcasting review scheduling regulations, and legal adherence."
Among MSOs, LG HelloVision (396 points) received the highest score. It was followed by T-broad (373 points), Hyundai HCN (362 points), D'Live (352 points), and CMB (325 points). In the MSO evaluation, financial soundness, investment in content and technology, employment of disabled persons and women, distribution of subscription fees, and compliance with relevant laws determined the rankings.
For regional private broadcasting TV (perfect score of 600 points), Daejeon Broadcasting received the highest score with 466 points. Other scores were Gwangju Broadcasting 451 points, OBS Gyeongin TV 420 points, Ulsan Broadcasting 445 points, Jeonju Broadcasting 431 points, Jeju Broadcasting 414 points, Cheongju Broadcasting 425 points, KNN (Busan) 429 points, TBC (Daegu) 474 points, and G1 (Gangwon) 462 points.
