Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Obtains Basic Certification for 'LNG Carrier Cybersecurity' from Korean Register
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) announced on the 1st that it has obtained basic certification for 'LNG Carrier Cyber Security' technology from the Korean Register (KR).
Currently, the global shipbuilding and shipping industries are actively introducing smart ships that integrate advanced digital technologies into ship operation, such as real-time connection between vessels at sea and onshore. Cyber security technology plays a role in safely protecting critical data and networks on operating ships from external cyber threats such as hacking.
Recently, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) announced plans to strengthen security standards for cyber risks targeting shipping companies and vessels worldwide from 2021, making the establishment of cyber security systems necessary for smart ship operation and management mandatory for global shipowners.
Amid this, DSME has obtained basic certification for cyber security-related technology from the Korean Register for LNG carriers, a key ship type representing the Korean shipbuilding industry, meeting the requirements of world-class shipowners and classification societies, thereby enhancing its technological competitiveness in this field.
The cyber security technology developed by DSME this time includes a total of 48 items such as safety and risk assessment, ▲ real-time data transmission and reception inspection, ▲ lock security for Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT), ▲ real-time antivirus vaccine updates using satellites, ▲ firewall functions through IP filtering, and automatic system backup, all of which passed the strict certification standards set by the Korean Register.
Kwon Oh-ik, Executive Vice President and Head of Technology Division at DSME, said, "With this certification, we can provide shipowners with safer and smarter vessels." He added, "We will gain an advantage in the order market, which has been sluggish due to the COVID-19 pandemic, by continuously securing digital technology competitiveness."
