This handover ceremony was an official event for Pukyong National University to take delivery of the Baekgyeongho, which was completed by Daeseon Shipbuilding.
The event was held in compliance with COVID-19 quarantine guidelines, with only key personnel from Pukyong National University, Daeseon Shipbuilding, Korea Register, and KR Engineering in attendance.
The ceremony included an introduction to the Baekgyeongho construction process, the naming of the Baekgyeongho, the delivery of the class certificate, and horn blowing (Horn Blowing - the ship's horn announcing the birth of the vessel).
The Baekgyeongho, the largest training ship in the fisheries sector, was constructed with a government budget of 53.2 billion KRW, starting from April 2019.
It measures 97 meters in length, 15.4 meters in width, with a gross tonnage of 3,997 tons, capable of carrying 160 crew members and trainees, and has a maximum speed of 16 knots.
Equipped with the latest clouding computer system and LAN facilities, it features an onboard networking and ship management system capable of real-time monitoring of navigation and engine information, as well as a simulation training system utilizing these technologies, making it a state-of-the-art training ship.
As an eco-friendly vessel, it is equipped with a TIER3 grade emission reduction device, the highest level among training ships to prevent air pollution, and features a Dynamic Positioning System (DPS) that allows training activities to be conducted in one place for extended periods.
The name ‘Baekgyeongho’ is a re-naming of the training ship Baekgyeongho used by Pukyong National University in the 1960s, which pioneered Korea’s deep-sea fishing industry.
Along with Baekgyeongho, Pukyong National University will navigate the oceans with two state-of-the-art ‘sea campuses,’ including the marine exploration ship Naraho (1,494 tons), completed in 2015, embarking on marine pioneering activities.
