Eight Local Markets Revitalized in Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi and Chuncheon, Gangwon, Among Others
Ministry of SMEs and Startups Selects Sites for 4th 'Sangwon Renaissance' Project
[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Hyewon] The fourth phase (next year) of the "Commercial District Renaissance" project aimed at revitalizing the deteriorated grassroots commercial districts in old urban areas has been finalized with eight selected locations, including Dongjak in Seoul, Yangpyeong in Gyeonggi, and Chuncheon in Gangwon.
On the 30th, the Ministry of SMEs and Startups announced the selection results for the fourth phase of the Commercial District Renaissance project. The project goes beyond individual support for single traditional markets or shopping streets, providing comprehensive support for environmental improvements and commercial district revitalization worth 8 billion KRW over five years in cooperation with local governments, targeting entire commercial districts.
Among the eight locations selected this year, Seoul's Dongjak plans to promote digitalization of the commercial district connecting Sadang and Isu stations, support workshop street experience programs, and develop specialized products to create a representative themed street in Dongjak that attracts people of all ages.
In Yangpyeong, Gyeonggi, specialized streets such as "Gui Gui" and "Spicy Food" will be created, and travelers visiting popular metropolitan area destinations like "Dumulmeori," "Semiwon," and "Bicycle Paths" will be attracted to the commercial district.
Chuncheon in Gangwon plans to organically link specialized product development, SNS marketing studios, online markets, and smart short-distance delivery to create a "Smart Favorable" Chuncheon commercial district.
Jecheon in Chungbuk aims to develop native beer specialty products and activate the commercial district as a "Rock & Rest (樂&休)" area where locals and tourists can enjoy and relax together through craft beer festivals and the establishment of a Brewing LAB.
Buan in Jeonbuk will leverage the 2023 World Jamboree and the establishment of a local garden (next year) as opportunities for commercial district revitalization by linking with the Urban Regeneration New Deal project (Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport) to create and operate a travel consumer hub (Buan Tour Center). Meanwhile, Jindo in Jeonnam plans to create a "Lively Street" combining traditional sound culture and modern trot culture by utilizing its beautiful scenery and nearby resorts as resources.
Mungyeong in Gyeongbuk will utilize extreme sports as a tourism resource and develop specialty products such as omija (five-flavor berry) and medicinal stone pork as sports health specialty products. Changwon in Gyeongnam plans to create themed streets using local cultural assets such as the Jinhae Gunhangje Festival and modern architecture, develop tourism content (tours, sales, experiences), and operate "Youth Startup" programs including startup leagues.
