The ‘City Residents Become Jeonnam Fishermen’ program was jointly conducted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, Jeonnam Province, Jindo-gun, and the Jeonnam Fishery Migration and Settlement Support Center. It provided on-site settlement training for city residents wishing to migrate to fishing villages to live and prepare for settlement.
Prospective fishery migrants participated from various regions nationwide, including Chungbuk, Jeonbuk, and Busan, staying for a month from early November. They experienced on-site activities such as abalone, sea cucumber, and flatfish farms, barehanded fishing, and received fishery migration counseling and expert education.
In particular, through customized experiences and education, about 30% of the participants actually purchased houses and relocated to settle in Jindo-gun.
Mr. Son (52 years old) said, “I liked the fishing village and traveled to more than 10 places nationwide over three years to experience them in order to relocate, but the threshold for joining fishing village cooperatives was too high and they did not open their hearts. However, in Sinki Village, everyone welcomed me and allowed me to experience various fisheries, so I settled in Sinki Village.”
Kim Seong-seok, head of the fishing village cooperative (Gunnae-myeon, Jindo-gun), said, “My heart is full as the residents of Sinki Village and the trainees become one and communicate with each other, and young people are moving to the village. To become a Sinki Village without territoriality, we significantly revised the cooperative’s articles of association last year to lower the threshold, and we will actively support more city residents to move to Jindo-gun in the future.”

An official from the Jindo-gun Port Development Division said, “It must have been a meaningful month for city residents to understand fishing villages and experience fishery migration,” and added, “After the one-month living experience ends, we will devise various methods to help more hopeful people settle in Jindo-gun.”
