Jongno-gu Pyeongchang-dong and Sangmyung University Route Accelerates Gangbuk Transverse Line Development
Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Gains Momentum to Start Construction of 'Gangbuk Transversal Line' Passing Through Jongno-gu Following Approval of 2nd Seoul Urban Rail Network Plan... Among 19 Stations, ▲Pyeongchang-dong ▲Sangmyung University 2 Stations Pass Through Jongno-gu
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Following the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's approval and announcement of the '2nd Seoul Metropolitan City Urban Railway Network Construction Plan' on the 17th, the light rail project 'Gangbuk Transversal Line,' passing through Jongno-gu (District Mayor Kim Young-jong), has gained momentum.
The 'Gangbuk Transversal Line' (25.72 km), connecting Cheongnyangni Station and Mok-dong Station, includes two stations?Pyeongchang-dong and Sangmyung University?within Jongno-gu among its total 19 stations.
Among the 11 lines announced by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport this time, this line is expected to be the first to commence construction, aiming to address transportation deprivation and reduce the gap between Gangnam and Gangbuk areas. It belongs to the east-west section of northern Seoul and includes many areas where residential environments have become convenient due to redevelopment and new town construction over the past decades, but transportation has remained inconvenient.
Upon completion, transfers will be possible to urban rail lines such as Line 1, Gyeongui-Jungang Line, Bundang Line, GTX-B and C lines, and Myeonmok Line.
Since procedures such as the preliminary feasibility study by the Ministry of Strategy and Finance remain after the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's announcement, Jongno-gu plans to closely cooperate with Seoul City and related organizations to reflect the demand for urban railway networks within the region and strive to improve conditions in public transportation vulnerable areas.
The lines approved and announced by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport this time include 10 lines: Gangbuk Transversal Line, Western Line, Mok-dong Line, Myeonmok Line, Nangok Line, Ui-Sinseol Extension Line, Southern Extension of Western Line, Northern Extension of Sillim Line, Line 4 Express, and Line 5 Direct Connection, plus one conditional line: the 4th phase additional extension of Line 9, totaling 11 lines. The planning period is from this year until 2030.
The project budget is 7.26 trillion KRW.
