"The Final Stop of the US Journey is the Grammys: BTS Challenges the Highest Honor"
Nominees for the 63rd Grammy Awards Announced at 2 AM on the 25th
Conservative Bias Strong but High Chances of Nomination Predicted
BLACKPINK Also Mentioned as Rookie of the Year Candidate
The group BTS is challenging the Grammy Awards, the most prestigious ceremony in the American popular music industry.
The Recording Academy in the United States will announce the nominees for the 63rd Grammy Awards via online live broadcast starting at 2 a.m. on the 25th (Korean time). The awards cover works released from September last year to August this year. BTS has never been nominated before. Unlike the American Music Awards, which are decided by fan votes, or the Billboard Music Awards, which are based on Billboard data, the nominees and winners of this ceremony are determined by members of the Recording Academy, a group of music professionals. The focus is on musical achievement rather than popularity or commercial success, but it is known to be white-centric and resistant to change.
BTS has consistently mentioned the Grammys as a remaining dream. Even on the 24th, a day before the nominee announcement, they told the American magazine Esquire, "We want to be nominated for the Grammys and, if possible, win an award. We think the final goal of our journey into the American (pop) stage is the Grammys." The possibility of nomination is considered higher than ever. BTS won the Billboard Music Awards for four consecutive years and the American Music Awards for three consecutive years this year. Following the global success of the album 'Map of the Soul: 7' and the single 'Dynamite' reaching number one on the Billboard main singles chart, they have solidified their status as top artists in the pop market.
Major foreign media such as the AP News and Billboard also see this year as an opportunity for nomination. In particular, Billboard predicted that 'Dynamite' could be nominated for 'Record of the Year,' one of the so-called four major general field categories at the Grammys. There is also talk of a possible nomination in the genre category 'Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.' The Recording Academy recently invited BTS to the Grammy stage, acknowledging their increased influence. BTS attended as presenters last year and performed a joint stage this year with rapper Lil Nas X and others.
BLACKPINK, which has rapidly grown this year, is also mentioned as a nominee for Best New Artist. The Recording Academy defines the award as given to an artist who "has achieved a significant breakthrough in public awareness and made a noticeable impact on the musical landscape with music released during the eligibility period." They have consecutively broken K-pop girl group records this year with singles like 'How You Like That' and 'Ice Cream.' Based on a solid fandom, they have expanded their popular presence in the mainstream pop market.
