SKT-Samsung Electronics, Leading International Standard Technology for 'Next-Generation Cloud Core Network'
[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] SK Telecom announced on the 22nd that it has developed the world's first next-generation cloud core network (Core Network) in collaboration with Samsung Electronics.
The cloud core network is a key mobile communication infrastructure that provides terminal authentication, customer services, and QoS management, which is the secondary 5G standard, for internet connectivity of data traffic from mobile devices such as smartphones. The next-generation core network developed this time is the world's first case that meets the international standard Rel.16.
Through the development of this next-generation cloud core network, users will be able to use internet services at faster speeds. Companies will be able to quickly develop and provide various customized products and services demanded by customers, which is expected to greatly contribute to the future development of the 5G industry.
The next-generation cloud core network developed through two years of collaboration between SK Telecom and Samsung Electronics is based on the cloud-native approach and applies SCP technology, characterized by timely provision of 5G ultra-low latency, ultra-high speed, and ultra-connectivity services without quality degradation.
The cloud-native approach allows application functions to be deployed and operated in modular units, enabling faster development and launch of 5G products and stable service provision.
SK Telecom's SCP technology, ‘T-Mesh,’ is a next-generation standard core technology that manages traffic between application modules, improving communication speed by 30% and maintaining stable traffic through immediate resource allocation in situations where traffic is concentrated all at once.
In particular, it is expected to significantly reduce the burden of network stability improvement and base station expansion such as mobile base stations in situations of localized traffic surges such as fireworks festivals, sports events, and local festivals.
Additionally, the quality improvement of representative 5G content such as AR, VR, and cloud games, as well as the activation of future growth business services such as autonomous driving, smart factories, and smart farms, are expected to rapidly expand the related ecosystem.
Meanwhile, the two companies signed a memorandum of understanding earlier this year to jointly research 5G advancement and 6G evolution technologies. They plan to continue comprehensive cooperation to provide customers with the best communication network services through joint development and commercialization of 5G-related ▲network technologies ▲innovative terminals and software ▲smart solutions.
Jonggwan Park, Head of SK Telecom’s 5GX Technology Group, said, “The SCP-based cloud-native core network developed for the first time in the world this time will further accelerate the spread of 5G-related products and services, increasing customer benefits,” adding, “We will continue to introduce various next-generation network innovation technologies through close cooperation with Samsung Electronics to enhance the status of Korea’s 5G technology.”
