Philips, LG Uplus, and KBS Also Seek Startup Problem Solvers
Philips 'AI-Based Patient Condition Analysis', LG Uplus 'Mobile Baseball Broadcast Service Maximizing Liveliness' Project Finals
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Cheol-hyun] Startup problem solvers are emerging one after another to solve the concerns of large corporations. Philips is looking for startups to jointly solve the challenge of 'AI-based patient condition analysis,' and LG Uplus is seeking startups to maximize the vividness of 'mobile baseball broadcasting services.' The Ministry of SMEs and Startups (Minister Park Young-sun, hereinafter referred to as the Ministry) announced on the 20th that it held a contest for challenges presented by Philips Korea and LG Uplus as part of the first phase of the 'Large Corporation-Startup Problem Solver Platform,' and that on the 21st, the finals for KBS's 'Drama Viewership Prediction' will be held.
The 'Large Corporation-Startup Problem Solver Platform' is a new type of win-win cooperation policy that connects large corporations and startups to solve each other's problems together and complement each other's different capabilities. In the first phase contest, 208 startups participated in challenges from 9 large corporations. From July 30, over four months, various startup ideas were verified and the feasibility of solving the challenges was reviewed. Finally, 43 startups advanced to the finals, and since the 16th, finals for 8 challenges have been ongoing.
In this final, startups were selected to solve Philips Korea's challenge of 'AI-based patient condition analysis' for non-face-to-face monitoring of infectious disease patients and hospitalized patients. Philips prioritized applicability and commercialization potential in medical settings to enable rapid adoption, as protecting medical staff is urgent due to COVID-19. The 6 startups participating in the finals demonstrated various AI-based technologies, and medical staff from related fields such as laboratory medicine and infectious diseases also participated in the evaluation. Kang Sung-chun, Vice Minister of the Ministry, said, "Digital healthcare, whose importance has grown due to COVID-19, is a field attracting attention as a future new industry," adding, "Since it is a field where medical information services and information and communication technology converge, if Philips' network with medical institutions and experience in manufacturing medical devices combine with startups' AI technology through the Large Corporation-Startup Problem Solver Platform, it is expected to create new growth engines."
The final to find solutions for LG Uplus's 'Maximizing the realism of the mobile baseball broadcasting dedicated app service' included former LG winning player Kim Yong-su as a judge, who closely examined the realism of baseball games and the validity of pitch prediction. A total of 3 companies participated, showcasing technologies such as real-time extraction of pitch and hit data using high-speed cameras and image processing visualized as broadcast content, pitch prediction analyzing pitcher posture with AI, and high-resolution screen zoom technology that allows vivid viewing of every corner of the stadium through resolution restoration technology.

On the 21st, the finals for KBS's AI-based drama viewership prediction challenge will be held. This challenge was proposed as KBS considered improving the decision-making method for drama production, which requires enormous production costs, to strengthen content competitiveness. Five startups are participating, and the accuracy of experimental results conducted on previously aired dramas and the validity of algorithms used for viewership prediction will be verified. Producers will also participate in the evaluation to examine usability.
