President Moon to Attend APEC Virtual Summit on 20th... "President Trump Also Participating" (Comprehensive)
On the 21st-22nd, the G20 Summit will be held via video conference at the Blue House... "Efforts to Facilitate Essential Personnel Movement and Include a Leaders' Declaration"
[Asia Economy Reporters Ryu Jeong-min and Son Seon-hee] President Moon Jae-in will consecutively attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and the Group of Twenty (G20) summit meetings starting from the 20th. U.S. President Donald Trump will also attend the APEC meeting.
President Moon is expected to explain South Korea's contributions regarding COVID-19 quarantine experience, vaccine development, and the Digital and Green New Deal plans.
The Blue House announced on the 19th that President Moon will attend the APEC summit, the world's largest regional cooperation body, on the 20th. From the 21st to the 22nd, he will participate in the G20 summit, the world's top economic forum. President Moon plans to conduct the summit meetings via video conference from the Blue House. Since the meetings will be held virtually rather than in person, bilateral talks between heads of major countries will not take place.
Malaysia, the chair country of APEC, has set the summit theme as "Optimizing Human Potential Toward a Resilient Future of Shared Prosperity." Amid the COVID-19 crisis, the leaders are expected to discuss regional COVID-19 responses and adopt the APEC "Future Vision."
Through his remarks, President Moon will share South Korea's COVID-19 quarantine experience and introduce the country's contributions to the international community, including humanitarian aid and efforts in developing treatments and vaccines.
Among the 21 member countries, attendance by leaders from Mexico and Peru has not been confirmed, while it has been confirmed that U.S. President Trump will attend. A senior Blue House official stated, "We understand that President Trump will attend the APEC meeting," adding, "His attendance at the G20 summit has not been confirmed."
Additionally, the G20 summit, originally scheduled to be held in Saudi Arabia, the chair country this year, will be held virtually due to the COVID-19 situation. The theme for this year is "Realizing Opportunities of the 21st Century for All." On the first day, the 21st, discussions will focus on "Overcoming the Pandemic and Recovery of Growth and Jobs," covering quarantine measures and economic and financial responses.
President Moon was invited as a speaker by King Salman of Saudi Arabia, along with leaders from six countries including France and Germany, to the first side event themed "Pandemic Preparedness and Response."
The Blue House explained, "South Korea plans to contribute by sharing its successful COVID-19 response experience and deriving countermeasures with many G20 countries currently facing a resurgence of COVID-19."
On the second day, the 22nd, discussions will focus on "An Inclusive, Sustainable, and Resilient Future," covering the achievement of sustainable development goals, support for vulnerable groups, environmental protection, and climate change response. The side event will emphasize the issue of "Protecting the Earth."
Park Bok-young, Senior Secretary for Economic Affairs at the Blue House, explained, "In the special summit held last March, a phrase related to facilitating the movement of essential personnel was included in the leaders' declaration at South Korea's proposal. We are now working to include language in the November leaders' declaration that seeks specific measures to facilitate the movement of personnel."
