Seongdong-gu Practices Kimchi Sharing for 850 Needy Households
Gu Holds Kimchi-Making Event for Neighbors with 80 Participants from Saemaeul Women's Association and Women's Federation on 17-18...Using Paper Boxes Instead of Styrofoam to Lead Environmental Protection
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) held the "2020 Love Kimchi Making Event" for low-income families in preparation for the winter season over two days on the 17th and 18th at the plaza in front of Seongdong-gu Office.
This event, organized to ease the kimchi-making cost burden for low-income families during winter, involved about 80 volunteers including members of the Saemaul Women's Association, Saemaul Leaders Council, and the Federation of Women's Organizations. They prepared a total of 3,000 heads of kimchi, from preparing the kimchi ingredients to mixing them.
The kimchi was distributed in 10kg portions to 850 low-income households across 17 neighborhoods in the district.
Notably, this year the kimchi was packed and delivered in paper boxes instead of the usual Styrofoam boxes, drawing attention. This change was proposed by the "Living Policy Research Group," composed of members of the Seongdong-gu Council, reflecting concerns that Styrofoam is a major cause of environmental pollution and is destroying ecosystems.
Hwang Sun-hwa, chairperson of the Living Policy Research Group, said, "Styrofoam breaks down into tiny particles that float into the sea, and fish that consume them end up on our dining tables, creating a vicious cycle. We proposed this with the intention of helping neighbors in need while also considering the environment."

Jeong Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, expressed gratitude, saying, "I thank the volunteers from the Saemaul Women's Association, the Federation of Women's Organizations, and others who stepped forward for our neighbors who have become even more vulnerable during these difficult times. I hope this small act of kindness becomes a great heart that helps struggling families even a little, and I am proud that this meaningful event was held with consideration for both helping neighbors and the environment."
