Samhwa Paint Develops Korea's First 'Anti-viral Paint'
Contains Antiviral Ingredients... 99.9% Virus Elimination Within 24 Hours
'Virus titer' is a value converted into units based on the level at which the virus artificially infects and proliferates. The graph above shows that with regular paint, the virus was completely inactivated within 48 to 72 hours, whereas with antiviral paint, the virus was completely inactivated within 6 to 24 hours. View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jong-hwa] As the third wave of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) is anticipated, Samhwa Paint Industrial Co., Ltd. has developed the country's first 'Anti-viral Paint' capable of responding to coronaviruses.
The anti-viral paint independently developed by Samhwa Paint Research Institute has completed all virus inactivation tests and verifications, including against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and others, conducted by FITI Testing & Research Institute and an agency under the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
Samhwa Paint's anti-viral coating contains porous inorganic materials with antiviral functions. When airborne viruses adhere to the paint, the virus reduction effect begins after 30 minutes, and 99.9% of the viruses are inactivated within 24 hours.
Notably, the virus used in the antiviral test was a non-enveloped virus called porcine enterovirus (a member of the Picornavirus family). According to a white paper by the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), if an antiviral agent is effective against highly resistant non-enveloped viruses such as picornaviruses, it is also effective against enveloped viruses with weaker resistance, such as coronaviruses and Ebola viruses.
A representative of Samhwa Paint stated, "The anti-viral paint is developed for interior use with pure acrylic resin. It is resistant to contamination and has excellent cleanability, so it is expected to be useful not only in public places such as airports and train stations but also in multi-use facilities like hospitals and schools, as well as in environments requiring special hygiene and health factors, such as HACCP-certified factories."
