Justice Party "Lee Yong-seop, Mayor of Gwangju, Take Full Political Responsibility for Military Airport Relocation"
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Justice Party Gwangju Metropolitan City Branch urged Gwangju Mayor Lee Yong-seop to “stop hiding behind the public opinion survey and take political responsibility for the airport relocation.”
On the 13th, the Justice Party Gwangju Branch stated in a press release, “The direct Citizens’ Rights Committee announced the results of a public opinion survey on the relocation of the civilian airport next year and recommended ‘reconsidering the civilian airport relocation without linking it to the military airport.’”
It continued, “In August 2018, Mayor Lee promised unconditional integration and relocation of the Gwangju civilian airport to Muan International Airport at the Gwangju-Jeonnam Win-Win Development Committee, and Jeonnam agreed to cooperate on the military airport relocation. Following this decision, local residents expected the long-standing regional issue of military airport relocation to proceed smoothly, but almost two years after the agreement, there has been no progress on related matters,” it explained.
It added, “However, at the point when conflicts arising from the city-province integration are settling, there appears to be suspicion that the promise of civilian airport relocation is being nullified by citing the public opinion survey results. There is concern that conflicts between the city and province may reoccur.”

Furthermore, “While the military airport relocation is a long-standing wish of Gwangju citizens, it is also a political challenge that Jeonnam cannot readily accept due to various interests. We hope Mayor Lee will not hide behind the public opinion survey but will carefully and wisely resolve this issue by gathering various opinions based on trust between the city and province,” it added.
