"Document Forgery, Nighttime Student Labor" Apple Suspends Orders to Taiwan Pegatron
[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] Apple has decided to halt additional orders to its iPhone manufacturing partner Pegatron for violating its labor regulations.
On the 9th (local time), Apple announced in a statement that Taiwan's Pegatron violated program management regulations concerning student workers by assigning them to night and overtime shifts through document forgery. It was also confirmed that some student workers were assigned tasks unrelated to their majors.
Apple stated, "Pegatron made tremendous efforts to manipulate documents to evade supervisory systems," and added, "No new orders will be placed until the related corrective measures are fully implemented."
Pegatron is a major Apple partner that manufactures iPhones alongside Taiwan's Foxconn. In a separate statement, the company acknowledged violations involving student workers at its Shanghai and Kunshan factories in China, stating that these workers have been removed from their duties and appropriately compensated. Pegatron has also dismissed the person responsible for the related program.
