10 University Remote Education Support Centers Selected... Bridging Regional Gaps in Non-Face-to-Face Classes

[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] On the 9th, the Ministry of Education and the Korea Education and Research Information Service announced that they have selected a total of 10 university and junior college consortia, one per region, as candidates for the establishment of regional university remote education support centers.
In the metropolitan area, Hanyang University and Dongyang Mirae University; in Gangwon, Kangwon National University and Hallym Sacred Heart University; in Chungbuk, Chungbuk National University and Chungbuk Provincial College; in Daejeon, Chungnam, and Sejong, Chungnam National University and Daejeon University of Science and Technology; in Jeonbuk, Jeonbuk National University and Jeonju Vision College; in Gwangju and Jeonnam, Chonnam National University and Donggang College; in Daegu and Gyeongbuk, Kyungpook National University and Daegu Health College; in Ulsan and Gyeongnam, Gyeongsang National University and Gyeongnam Provincial Geochang College; in Busan, Pusan National University and Gyeongnam Information College; and in Jeju, Jeju National University and Jeju Halla University consortia were selected.
The regional university remote education support centers will be utilized as hubs to manage the quality of non-face-to-face classes at universities and junior colleges within each region by establishing shared learning management systems (LMS) and joint video production studios capable of real-time video classes. They will provide remote teaching education programs to university faculty in each region and also support remote education counseling.

Professor Taeok Lee of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), who serves as the chair of the university remote education support center project management committee, said, "I hope that the regional centers will become a starting point for innovation in higher education to prepare for the future society represented by digital transformation by sharing remote teaching resources among universities and providing various opportunities to enhance faculty members' remote teaching capabilities."
