[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jong-hwa] The awards ceremony for the "32nd 2020 Korea Interior Architecture Competition," co-hosted by KCC and KCC Glass in collaboration with the Korea Society of Interior Designers (KOSID), was held on the 7th at the Hongik University Daehakro Art Center.
Since 2010, KCC has been the main sponsor for 11 years, co-hosting the Korea Interior Architecture Competition with KOSID to discover talented and promising young people in the architectural design field and to support their advancement into related fields. Earlier this year, KCC Glass, which spun off from KCC, also participated as a sponsor.
This year's Korea Interior Architecture Competition began its first round of submissions in October and proceeded through the first and second rounds of judging over about a month. Out of a total of 210 entries, after the first and second rounds of judging, one Grand Prize, two Excellence Awards, five Merit Awards, nineteen Encouragement Awards, twenty-eight Special Selections, and fifty-two Selections were chosen. The Grand Prize team received a certificate and a prize of 6 million KRW, the Excellence Award winners received certificates and 3 million KRW each, and the other awardees were also given certificates and a certain amount of prize money.
The Grand Prize honor went to the team of students Lee Byung-chul, Jang Dong-hyuk, and Choi Min-sung from Konkuk University Global Campus for their work titled "Muljae (재)." The winning project proposed rice not merely as a simple ingredient but as a lifestyle and a future eco-friendly resource, aiming to stimulate rice consumption.
Judge Chairperson Ahn Hee-young stated, "It is important to be faithful not only to design but also to relevance and process," adding, "It is crucial to suggest directions for rapidly changing indoor environments due to external factors and to propose solutions based on deep consideration of interior spaces," outlining the main judging criteria.
Song Ho-chul, Head of KCC Building Materials Promotion, said in his congratulatory speech, "In a time when non-face-to-face interactions and hyper-personalization are accelerating, paradoxically, architects must also consider how to prevent people from becoming isolated or alienated," and added, "I hope designers will create healthy urban spaces by keeping pace with changes while firmly establishing continuous value."
A KCC Glass representative said, "Discovering excellent new talents who will lead Korea's interior architecture design world and supporting their growth ultimately promotes the long-term development of the architectural industry and helps create a more advanced society," and added, "We always support talented individuals who proactively challenge themselves based on expertise and plan to continue various industry-academia cooperation activities and talent development support programs."
