Yongsan-gu Love Kimchi Sharing... 535 More Boxes Than Last Year
2020 Love Kimjang Sharing... Held in each neighborhood from 10th to 12th... 15,350 boxes of 8kg each... 84 tons scale, considering COVID-19, purchased finished products, skipping mixing... 20-40 volunteers per neighborhood to deliver Kimjang Kimchi
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yongsan-gu (District Mayor Seong Jang-hyun) will hold the ‘2020 Love Kimchi Sharing’ event over three days from the 10th to the 12th at each neighborhood community center.
The quantity is 15,350 boxes of 8kg each, totaling 84 tons. This is an increase of 535 boxes (4 tons) compared to last year. Namyeong-dong has the largest amount with 1,435 boxes, and Ichon 2-dong has the smallest with 282 boxes.
The required budget is 300 million KRW. The Yongsan Welfare Foundation (Chairman Lee Sang-yong) supports the costs, and the 16 neighborhood community security councils each signed contracts for the quantities.
The target companies were limited this year to those from the district’s sister cities (Cheongju, Damyang, Yeongwol), which suffered significant flood damage.
Considering the COVID-19 situation, the district will omit the mixing process. Volunteers have been reduced to one-quarter compared to the previous year. A minimum of 20 to 40 people per neighborhood will participate, and kimchi will be delivered in a mostly non-face-to-face manner.
In some neighborhoods, private sponsorship items such as daily necessities, winter supplies, and food and beverages will also be distributed along with the kimchi.
Foreign honorary community leaders of the district will also support the event. On the 11th, 18 honorary community leaders including ‘Belyakov Ilya’ and ‘Zahid Hussein,’ known from JTBC’s ‘Non-Summit,’ will distribute kimchi in Namyeong-dong.
Yongsan District Mayor Seong Jang-hyun plans to visit the sites of all 16 neighborhoods in the order of Yongsan 2-ga - Huam - Hangang-ro - Itaewon 1 - Itaewon 2 - Hannam (Day 1), Namyeong - Hyochang - Wonhyo 1 - Wonhyo 2 - Yongmun (Day 2), Cheongpa - Ichon 2 - Ichon 1 - Seobinggo - Bogwang-dong (Day 3) to encourage the volunteers.
In Hangang-ro and Namyeom-dong, the district mayor will personally visit one or two beneficiary households to check on low-income residents and their living conditions. In Hyochang and Ichon 1-dong, webcam video calls (online interviews) will be held with beneficiary residents.
Yongsan District Mayor Seong Jang-hyun said, “Every year, 2,000 volunteers participate and make kimchi like a festival, but this year it is difficult. We will convey our sincerity through finished products and help low-income residents get through the winter.”
