New Phase in US-China Relations with Biden's Victory... US Ambassador to China Seeks "Mutually Beneficial Relationship"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] As the U.S. presidential election concluded with Joe Biden's victory, attention is focusing on whether the U.S. and China will enter a new phase with the emergence of the new Biden administration.
According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP) on the 8th, Robert Forden, Acting U.S. Ambassador to China, stated at a discussion on U.S.-China relations and the 2020 election held on the 5th at the Cha Haer Research Institute, a Chinese think tank in Beijing, that "the United States and China will pursue a fair and mutually beneficial relationship."
This statement drew even more attention as it came from the U.S. Embassy in China, which had issued critical remarks targeting China over the past year.
Notably, the event was also attended by Li Changmin, former Consul General of China in Houston, whose consulate was closed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Acting Ambassador Forden added, "The United States will continue to pursue a results-oriented relationship that substantively resolves the long-standing bilateral issues with China following the U.S. presidential election."
On the 6th, the U.S. Embassy in China also posted a statement under the ambassador's name on its official WeChat (China's version of KakaoTalk) account, sending a message hinting at improved relations with China.
According to the statement, "Dialogue is the best way to understand each other," emphasizing that "regardless of the U.S. election outcome, the United States will continue to promote a fair and mutually beneficial relationship with China, and there is broad and consistent bipartisan support for the current U.S. China policy."
On the same day, according to Hong Kong media Ming Pao, Wang Yi, China's State Councilor and Foreign Minister, reportedly spoke at a meeting of the Global Advisory Committee of the School of Public Administration at Tsinghua University, calling for cooperation between the two countries in international relations and bilateral relations.
State Councilor Wang said, "The global governance system is built together by all, so we must not fall into nationalism and self-centered behavior," adding, "International relations must never return to an era governed by the 'law of the jungle.'"
Ming Pao analyzed that the nationalism and self-centered behavior Wang referred to were aimed at U.S. President Donald Trump, subtly criticizing the current U.S. administration's China policy.
