Trump's Claim of "De Facto Victory" Draws Criticism from Both Republicans and Democrats
"This is an attempt to undermine the election process"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] On the early morning of the 4th (local time), as the vote counting was underway, U.S. President Donald Trump declared victory in the presidential election, drawing strong criticism from both the Republican and Democratic parties.
According to the U.S. political media outlet The Hill on the same day, Democratic Representative Dan Beyer tweeted, "Donald Trump is lying," adding, "He may want to steal the election through deception, but he will fail." He further stated, "All votes, including mail-in ballots, must be counted."
Democratic Representative Mary Gay Scanlon also tweeted, "Let's be clear," criticizing, "Attempts to undermine our election process that requires all votes to be counted are inherently undemocratic and un-American."
Justin Amash, a Representative who left the Republican Party last year, condemned, "Trump's victory declaration is one of the most dishonest and dictatorial speeches ever made by a U.S. president."
Voices of criticism also came from the Republican Party.
Republican Representative Adam Kinzinger responded to President Trump's tweet claiming a "landslide victory" by saying, "Stop it," adding, "Counting will continue, and you may win or lose." He continued, "America will accept this," joining the criticism by saying, "Patience is a virtue."
Chris Christie, a close aide to President Trump and former Governor of New Jersey, told ABC News, "I do not agree with the president's decision," pointing out, "It is a strategic misjudgment and a bad political decision."
