Opening of the Public Complex Building in Oksu-dong, Seongdong-gu, Embracing the History of Dokseodang
Seongdong-gu Opens ‘Oksu-dong Public Complex Office’ Housing ‘Dongho Reading Room’ on the 5th...Recreating Joseon Dynasty Reading Room Space as a Community Communication and Harmony Area with Amenities and Parking
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) will open the “Oksu-dong Public Complex Building,” a multi-cultural space embracing the history of the reading hall, on the 5th.
Completed in 1985 and serving the residents of Oksu-dong for 33 years, the Oksu-dong Community Center had many inconveniences for residents due to maintenance costs after more than 30 years since its construction, lack of office and resident convenience spaces, and old, cramped, and limited parking spaces.
The newly constructed Oksu-dong Public Complex Building was built on a site adjacent to the existing community center, with a land area of 906㎡, a total floor area of 2,683㎡, two basement floors, and five above-ground floors. With a total project cost of 12.9 billion KRW, it was reborn by expanding insufficient resident convenience facilities and creating cultural spaces.
This building, featuring a unique and beautiful exterior design with a daylight system that automatically opens and closes according to sunlight, is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities not seen in other district offices. It focuses on creating spaces for communication and harmony with local residents by including administrative spaces as well as the “Dongho Reading Hall,” a multipurpose program room, and neighborhood living facilities.
In particular, the fifth floor’s “Dongho Reading Hall” of the public complex building, named after the original “Dongho Reading Hall” established in Dumopo (present-day Oksu-dong) during the Joseon Dynasty to nurture important national talents, features a “Resident Lounge” and “Indoor Garden” with traditional roof tiles and bamboo landscaping that highlight traditional beauty, as well as a “Stair Yard.” A small library is also arranged to allow residents to enjoy reading, making it a cultural space where residents can experience both the history and identity of the reading hall and reading itself.
Additionally, a 22-space parking lot was created to alleviate parking difficulties and improve convenience for residents visiting the new building.
A district official stated, “Since starting operations at the new building on October 26, we have been fully preparing before the opening ceremony to ensure no inconvenience to residents, including facility inspections.”
The opening ceremony on the 5th will strictly follow quarantine rules such as limiting the number of attendees, temperature checks, mask-wearing, maintaining at least 1 meter distance inside the facility, and managing mobile entry logs. For residents unable to attend, a live broadcast will be provided via the Seongdong-gu Office TV YouTube channel.
The event will begin with a pre-ceremony by a local folk troupe praying for the village’s peace and prosperity, followed by a commemorative tree planting, signboard unveiling, ribbon cutting, and facility tours.
