Tributes from Politics and Entertainment Sectors
Condolences are pouring in over the passing of Hollywood actor Sean Connery, who was originally from Scotland.
Connery passed away peacefully at the age of 90 on the 31st of last month (local time). His wife, Micheline Roquebrune, told the British daily Daily Mail on the 1st, "My husband passed away peacefully surrounded by family," adding, "I was always with him, and he left quietly." She said, "My husband suffered from dementia, and the damage was severe. It was no longer life for him. Later, he was unable to express himself. He fulfilled his final wish to leave quietly without any fuss."
Upon hearing the news of his death, Nicola Sturgeon, head of the Scottish Government, said, "I am heartbroken," and added, "We have lost one of our beloved sons." Connery was a prominent Scottish independence advocate during his lifetime. Even after being knighted by Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, he said, "Being born Scottish made my life completely different."
He spent decades living in the Bahamas and declared that he would only return permanently once Scotland achieved full independence. He had immense pride in his homeland and continuously supported independence.
Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel, expressed his condolences, saying, "I mourn the passing of Connery, an iconic actor and wonderful friend," and added, "I will always remember his humble charisma and warm smile."
Connery marked the beginning of James Bond in the 1962 film '007 Dr. No.' He starred in seven films of the 007 series and set the role model of the 'sexy male' in Hollywood cinema. Besides that, he left a strong impression in numerous works such as 'Murder on the Orient Express,' 'The Name of the Rose,' 'The Untouchables,' 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,' and 'The Rock.'
Colleagues in the entertainment industry recalled the acting and life of the top actor in their own ways. Shirley Bassey, who sang the theme song for '007 Goldfinger,' said she watched Connery play football and added, "I will always be there to cheer you on." Connery was talented enough in football to have received an offer to join Manchester United.
The family of the late Roger Moore, who succeeded Connery as Bond, remembered Connery as "the best James Bond." "He and Moore were friends for decades, and Moore never wavered in his opinion that Connery was the best James Bond."
Daniel Craig, the British actor currently carrying on the Bond legacy, described Connery as "a man who defined an era and style." "He will be remembered for much more than just James Bond. He contributed to creating modern blockbusters with megawatt-level wit and charm."
