[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Joo Sang-don] The number of births in August has been recorded as the lowest ever. The natural population decrease, where the number of deaths exceeds the number of births, has continued for 10 consecutive months since November last year. This is the longest period on record.
According to the population trends for August announced by Statistics Korea on the 28th, the number of births was 22,472, down 1,899 (-7.8%) compared to the same month last year. This is the lowest level ever recorded for August. The cumulative number of births from January to August was only 188,202, also marking the lowest level.
The number of deaths in August was 25,284, an increase of 1,577 (6.7%) compared to the same month last year.
The natural population decrease, calculated by subtracting the number of deaths from the number of births, has continued for 10 consecutive months since November last year (-1,685). In August alone, the population decreased by 2,812, marking the first time a natural decrease was recorded in August since statistics began.

The number of marriages in August was 15,033, down 3,303 (-18.0%) compared to one year ago. The number of divorces was 8,457, a decrease of 597 (-6.6%).
