41m Pedestrian Overpass Connecting Seoul Magok District to Han River Opens on 23rd
Total Project Cost of 5.9 Billion Won Invested to Transform into a Citizen Rest Area
[Asia Economy Reporter Jo In-kyung] Seoul City will open the newly established 'Magok Nadeulmok' at 10 a.m. on the 23rd to provide convenience for citizens' mobility.
Construction of Magok Nadeulmok, which began in October 2018, features a width of 6 meters and a connecting length of 41 meters, with a total project cost of 5.9 billion KRW.
Until now, to access Hangang Park from the Magok district, people had to use the Hangang connecting pedestrian overpass installed in the wetland area within Seoul Botanic Park. The pedestrian overpass, opened on May 1 last year, is exclusively for pedestrians, making it somewhat inconvenient for wheelchair and bicycle users to access.
Magok Nadeulmok has introduced a wing wall-shaped design in front of the Hangang entrance and exit to prevent collisions between pedestrians and bicycles, enhancing safety. The section within the embankment for entering and exiting Hangang was installed as a walkway rather than stairs, allowing wheelchair and bicycle users to use it safely and conveniently.
Additionally, to prevent summer floods in Hangang, a double sluice gate was installed in the exclusion zone, and remote control facilities related to water level rise measurement were established to ensure flood safety. A viewing deck was installed on the riverside embankment facing the Hangang entrance, providing a citizen rest area with an open view of the Hangang River.
Magok Nadeulmok features an organic design that harmonizes with Seoul Botanic Park and the neighborhood park currently under development within the Magok district, using eco-friendly materials. The ceiling is designed with a curved form to maximize soft structural beauty, the interior passage is finished with stone and eco-friendly wood, and high-efficiency LED lighting is installed along both edges of the ceiling to promote energy savings, creating a space with the image of a modern and sophisticated gallery.
Seo Nowon, Head of Seoul City Regional Development Headquarters, said, "With the opening of Magok Nadeulmok, all Seoul citizens, including residents of the Magok district, can safely and easily access Hangang." He added, "We hope this will become a starting point where bicycle users and pedestrians can enjoy tourism and relaxation as access to Hangang becomes more convenient."
