Minister of Environment Cho Myung-rae Sends Letter of Appreciation to Mayor Lee Yong-seop of Gwangju
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] “Gwangju Metropolitan City's goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2045 through the 2030 corporate RE100 and the 2035 Gwangju RE100 is considered to set a carbon neutrality milestone for other local governments.”
Minister of Environment Cho Myung-rae sent a letter of appreciation expressing gratitude and support for Gwangju Metropolitan City's pioneering efforts toward carbon neutrality by 2045.
According to Gwangju City on the 21st, the letter was in response to Mayor Lee Yong-seop's announcement of the ‘Gwangju-type AI-Green New Deal for Carbon Neutrality and Energy Independence by 2045’ with its three major strategies and eight core tasks at the 2nd Korean New Deal Strategy Meeting held at the Blue House on the 13th. As the Minister of Environment responsible for climate change response, he expressed appreciation and support for the local government's efforts toward carbon neutrality.
Minister Cho emphasized, “The main agents realizing carbon neutrality through the Green New Deal are local governments,” adding, “This is because the places where low-carbon transitions in production and consumption sectors and citizens' climate actions are implemented are the regions themselves.”
He continued, “Gwangju City's 2030 corporate RE100 and 2035 Gwangju RE100 goals for achieving carbon neutrality by 2045 provide a milestone for other local governments regarding carbon neutrality,” and said, “Especially thanks to Gwangju Metropolitan City laying the stepping stones, I am confident that the Republic of Korea can take one step further toward carbon neutrality.”
He added, “The Ministry of Environment will also strengthen communication and cooperation centered on the Carbon Neutral Local Government Practice Alliance launched in July to support regional balanced New Deal and carbon neutrality promotion.”
