Damyang-gun Selected as 'Excellent Special Zone' in Regional Special Zone Operation Performance Evaluation
[Damyang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yukbong] Damyang County, Jeollanam-do (Governor Choi Hyung-sik) announced on the 21st that the Damyang Humanities Education Special Zone was selected as an ‘Excellent Special Zone’ in the 2020 Regional Special Zone Operation Performance Evaluation (based on 2019 results) conducted among 190 special zones nationwide.
The Damyang Humanities Education Special Zone was designated in March 2016 as part of efforts to respond to population outflow to nearby large cities such as Gwangju Metropolitan City and to become a self-sufficient city.
It was recognized for solidly promoting 17 detailed projects in 4 fields and was selected as an excellent special zone among 190 regional special zones nationwide, receiving an encouragement award.
The selection of excellent regional special zones was made through document screening, on-site evaluation, and policy evaluation by experts from the Regional Special Zone Committee, assessing special zone operation strategies, utilization of regulatory exemptions, as well as contributions to the regional economy such as corporate attraction and job creation.
The county operates 309 humanities education programs using 498 lifelong education facilities, and has established humanities infrastructure including a youth cultural center, Haedong Culture and Arts Village, and the attraction of Songgang High School, a future-oriented alternative public high school.
By conducting art, ecology, and cultural heritage education experience programs linked to the humanities, it raised residents’ interest in the humanities and enhanced the brand awareness of the county, known as the birthplace of lyric literature, contributing to regional economic revitalization.
Governor Choi Hyung-sik said, “The selection of Damyang Humanities Education Special Zone as an excellent special zone is the result of recognition of the charm of Damyang by modernly inheriting the cultural heritage of lyric literature and pavilion literature that the county possesses. Going forward, we will systematically specialize humanities education and create a sustainable special zone through successful promotion of the traditional garden industry in connection with Juknokwon.”
