Securing Golden Time through Integrated Management... Safety Accidents Down 30%
Smart Green Industrial Complex <Part 1> Establishing Control Center to Reduce Disaster Damage
Gumi Industrial Complex Installs IoT Environmental Sensors
Collecting Data Such as Video Information with Intelligent CCTV
Equipped with Early Warning System Including Disaster Alerts
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Daeseop] In the past five years, there have been 164 safety accidents in national industrial complexes. In particular, there were many damages caused by fires and industrial disasters. In the case of Gumi Industrial Complex in Gyeongbuk, there have been as many as 17 safety accidents from 2015 to recently this year. The Gumi National Industrial Complex was also the site of a hydrofluoric acid gas leak accident causing casualties in 2012. This is a chronic problem of aging industrial complexes.
According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Korea Industrial Complex Corporation on the 20th, they plan to expand digital infrastructure in industrial complexes to address chronic issues such as safety, environment, and traffic. Within this year, they plan to pilot the establishment of 'Smart Industrial Complex Integrated Control Centers' in Gumi Industrial Complex in Gyeongbuk and Namdong National Industrial Complex in Incheon.
In Gumi Industrial Complex, an integrated control center centered on a corporate hazardous chemical substance database, hazardous substance detection sensors, and intelligent closed-circuit television (CCTV) will be established.
By installing Internet of Things (IoT) environmental sensors to grasp actual measurement information, building intelligent CCTV to secure video information, and linking public data (weather, environment, topographical information, etc.), data collection and standardization will become possible. Through this, early warning systems equipped with risk factor prediction, real-time disaster message transmission, and video information streaming will be established. In the case of Gumi Industrial Complex, safety accidents are expected to decrease by 30% with the establishment of the integrated control center.
In Namdong Industrial Complex, an integrated control center focused on safety and crime prevention data collection using drones, CCTV, and smart streetlights will be established. Data will be collected through IoT-based intersections and smart parking systems, smart streetlights, intelligent CCTV, and multipurpose patrol drones.
The expansion of Namdong Industrial Complex infrastructure will be promoted mainly as a convenience service providing road and traffic information. Through this, demand-tailored traffic and parking information provision, worker safe return home services, and smart convenience facilities will become possible. It is expected to bring effects such as resolving traffic and parking problems within the industrial complex, improving residential conditions and working environments, creating jobs, and reducing operating costs.

7 Pilot Complexes Selected Among 1223 Sites
15 Complexes to be Established by 2025
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Korea Industrial Complex Corporation plan to demonstrate digital-based solutions to solve chronic safety problems in aging industrial complexes at smart industrial complexes and expand them nationwide. Until now, accident reporting in industrial complexes relied on individual reports, but through integrated control, golden time will be secured, and evolving safety services will be provided using big data and artificial intelligence (AI)-based technologies.
The Smart Industrial Complex Integrated Control Center construction project aims to transform aging industrial complexes into pleasant and safe complexes through future-type integrated control services. This is part of the government's Smart Green Industrial Complex project. The Smart Green Industrial Complex refers to a competitive and environmentally friendly complex realized by promoting digitalization, energy self-sufficiency, and eco-friendliness of resident companies and infrastructure.
There are 1,223 industrial complexes nationwide (national complexes, general complexes, urban high-tech complexes, and agricultural-industrial complexes). The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Korea Industrial Complex Corporation selected a total of 7 pilot sites for Smart Green Industrial Complexes considering industrial importance, industrial base and ripple effects, and regional interest.
Along with Gumi Industrial Complex and Namdong Industrial Complex, the selected sites include Banwol-Sihwa National Industrial Complex in Gyeonggi, Changwon National Industrial Complex in Gyeongnam, Gwangju High-Tech National Industrial Complex, Seongseo General Industrial Complex in Daegu, and Yeosu National Industrial Complex in Jeonnam. By 2025, 15 Smart Green Industrial Complexes are planned to be established.
