Under Thorough Quarantine, Small-Scale Senior Events Held in Each District to Express Gratitude... On the Occasion of October Senior Month, the '24th Senior Citizens' Day Commendation Ceremony' Held for 22 Dedicated Seniors
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] "Everyone must be busy with COVID-19, but we are just grateful that you still take care of us like this every year."
Mr. Lee, an elderly resident of Myeonmok-dong, Jungnang-gu, became teary-eyed upon receiving a gift package.
In celebration of October as Senior Citizens Month, Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) prepared a special time for the elderly. The district announced that it arranged various programs to express gratitude and comfort to the seniors.
First, on the morning of the 16th at 10 a.m., the district held the '24th Senior Citizens Day Commemorative Award Ceremony' at the 4th-floor Planning Situation Room of Jungnang-gu Office, inviting meritorious individuals who contributed to the welfare of the elderly in the community.
The ceremony was held on a small scale with about 20 attendees to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the area, proceeding with the awarding of certificates and greetings.
Under strict quarantine measures, neighborhood harmony programs were also prepared for each dong. Until the 30th, healing programs such as companion plant therapy, flower arranging for seniors, and traditional Korean paper crafts (hanji crafts) will be offered to soothe the loneliness of the elderly in the community.
Gift packages carefully prepared by residents of each dong were also provided. The gift packages consisted of daily necessities, scarves, and other items essential for the seniors' daily lives, and were delivered in a non-face-to-face manner by leaving them at the front doors of the seniors' homes due to COVID-19.
In particular, the gift packages prepared this time are more meaningful as they were resident-participation type packages carried out by related organizations active in each dong.
Ryu Kyung-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, said, "I hope this time will be an opportunity to reflect on the meaning of filial piety during Senior Citizens Month," and added, "We will continue to prepare various elderly welfare policies such as care and job opportunities so that seniors in the community can enjoy a happy old age."
