Yangcheon-gu 'Hwangyeong Maeul' Musical Screening
The Story of Protecting Toilets in a Water-Scarce Eco Village: 'Hwangyeong Maeul' Musical Screening Satirizes Environmental Issues, Expected to Raise Environmental Awareness... Performance at Sinnam Middle School on the 21st, Also Live-Streamed on YouTube
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] In the era of With-Corona alongside COVID-19, the key keyword of this era is undoubtedly ‘contactless.’
Remote work, online classes, and various contactless cultural activities have rapidly penetrated our daily lives. If we add one more keyword, it would be environmental issues.
The climate changes that occurred this year, including infectious diseases, heatwaves, typhoons, floods, and wildfires, were enough to raise awareness about the environment. The recent emergence of new terms such as carbon footprint, 필(必)environment, and zero waste, reflecting growing interest in the environment, also supports this.
Environmental education for children and adolescents, who are the future generation and direct stakeholders of the environmental crisis, is therefore even more important.
Yangcheon-gu (Mayor Kim Soo-young) is planning and conducting a visiting environmental education program called ‘Banggre’ (short for Visiting Green Training), which combines environmental education and the arts through an environmental musical.
The environmental musical ‘Environmental Village’ is an adaptation of ‘Urinetown,’ which won awards for direction, script, and composition on Broadway for its originality and commercial success, and will visit Sinnam Middle School at 12:40 PM on the 21st.
This musical performance can also be watched live by anyone on the Yangcheon-gu Office YouTube channel ‘YangcheonTV.’
In a fictional city suffering from water shortage, where individuals monopolize restrooms, powerless citizens must pay money to use the toilet. If someone urinates for free elsewhere, they are dragged to Urinetown and never return. Using the absurd theme of toilet usage rights, the story criticizes abuse of power, environmental issues, and materialism through beautiful music and exciting dance.

Mayor Kim Soo-young said, “Environmental education for future generations is no longer optional but essential. Environmental education begins with awakening sensitivity to the relationship between the environment and ‘oneself.’” He added, “Rather than didactic education like ‘reduce disposable products’ or ‘separate waste,’ we hope this will nurture environmental sensitivity and become an opportunity for individuals to practice changes in their lives.”
