Honam University Selected for Ministry of Education's 'K-MOOC AI Designated Course'
Strengthening the Position of AI Specialized Universities
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Honam University, the only AI-specialized university in Korea that nurtures all students as AI convergence talents, has strengthened its position.
Honam University (President Park Sangcheol) announced on the 15th that it was selected for the Ministry of Education's '2020 Korean Massive Open Online Course (K-MOOC) AI (Artificial Intelligence) Field Designated Competition.'
K-MOOC is a service that allows anyone to take excellent online courses from university institutions for free, anytime and anywhere. Evaluation committees composed of MOOC experts and experts in each major comprehensively evaluate the institution's operational capabilities and the excellence of the courses to select them.
As the industrial fields utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) technology expand and the demand for AI learning increases, the Ministry of Education developed a completion system map according to the purpose of taking courses so that AI courses can be systematically taken through K-MOOC. In addition, new projects were solicited across 12 AI fields in 2020.
Among them, Honam University was selected in the 'Computational Recognition Field' and plans to develop the 'Autonomous Driving AI Course Solved by Mathematics,' which will be operated by team teaching of Professor Baek Ran from the Department of Computer Engineering and Professor Lee Eunkyung from the Department of Future Automotive Engineering.
In addition, the protagonist of 'Geniuses of the Mathematics Olympiad,' published in the United States, David Shin, a field expert, and top domestic and international experts in AI and autonomous driving industries will collaborate to provide a new teaching method model, making it easy and fun for non-majors to learn.
Meanwhile, Honam University, selected as an innovative leading university for the 4th Industrial Revolution by the Ministry of Education, has set the vision of an AI-specialized university since 2018 and invested a total of about 6.2 billion won to build an AI campus and lay the foundation for talent cultivation. To nurture all students as AI convergence talents, from the 2020 academic year, the curriculum was innovated so that all students are required to complete more than 15 credits of AI courses.
Recently, thanks to such bold and proactive AI talent cultivation and system establishment, Honam University was recognized as the best university in Korea leading the 4th Industrial Revolution era by winning the '2020 National Service Award' in the 'University-AI (Artificial Intelligence) Specialization Division.'
