[2020 National Audit] 23,000 Hidden Camera Crimes in Last 4 Years... 1 in 3 Occurred in Seoul

On the 15th, Han Byung-do, a member of the National Assembly's Public Administration and Security Committee from the Democratic Party of Korea, analyzed the National Assembly inspection data submitted by the National Police Agency and found that from 2016 to last year, a total of 23,337 cases of illegal filming crimes occurred. Two out of every three cases took place in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon, indicating a concentration in the metropolitan area.
Looking at the annual illegal filming crime status by city and province from 2016 to last year, Seoul recorded the highest number with 8,765 cases, followed by Gyeonggi Province (5,229 cases) and Incheon (1,706 cases). The number of illegal filming crimes in these three locations accounted for 67% of all such crimes nationwide.
Excluding the metropolitan area, the numbers were as follows: Busan 1,437 cases, Daegu 934 cases, Daejeon 784 cases, Chungnam 709 cases, Gyeongnam 683 cases, Gyeongbuk 578 cases, Gwangju 459 cases, Chungbuk 412 cases, Jeonbuk 371 cases, Gangwon 353 cases, Jeju 309 cases, Jeonnam 308 cases, and Ulsan 276 cases.
By location, train stations had the highest number with 3,247 cases. Illegal filming crimes were also confirmed around public transportation, with 2,413 cases in subways and 840 cases in other transportation means, indicating that a significant portion of these crimes occur near public transit. Additionally, apartments and houses (2,853 cases) and streets (2,329 cases) were among the top locations where such crimes occurred.
Meanwhile, illegal filming crimes were mainly committed by individuals aged 30 and under. Among the total 20,994 suspects arrested for illegal filming crimes over four years, those in their 20s accounted for the largest number with 7,193 cases, followed by those in their 30s with 4,964 cases. Crimes committed by those aged 19 and under, including juvenile offenders, also reached 3,830 cases.

Assemblyman Han Byung-do emphasized, "Illegal filming is a crime in itself and can cause secondary and tertiary damage through online leakage," adding, "Illegal filming crimes, which inflict irreparable wounds on victims, must be eradicated."
