Prime Minister Jeong Holds 'Thursday Dialogue' to Overcome Population Crisis...Adopts Joint Resolution
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwangho Lee] Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun will discuss solutions to the population crisis at the Thursday Dialogue on the 15th.
On the afternoon of the same day, Prime Minister Chung will hold the 21st Thursday Dialogue at the Prime Minister's Official Residence in Samcheong-dong under the theme "Population Crisis Outlook and Response Directions," addressing issues of low birthrate and aging population.
Participants in the Thursday Dialogue include Kwon Tae-seon, co-chair of the Citizens' Society Development Committee and co-representative of the Korea Federation for Environmental Movements; Kim Dong-myeong, chairman of the Federation of Korean Trade Unions; Woo Tae-hee, executive vice president of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry; and Lee Seung-yoon, chairman of the Youth Policy Coordination Committee.
Yoon Chang-ryeol, senior secretary for social affairs at the Blue House; Seo Hyung-soo, vice chairman of the Low Birthrate and Aging Society Committee; Kim Min-seok, chairman of the National Assembly Health and Welfare Committee; and Hwang Myung-sun, mayor of Nonsan and chairman of the National Association of Mayors, Governors, and District Heads, will also attend.
The attendees plan to adopt a "Joint Resolution for Responding to the Population Crisis," emphasizing that all members of society must work together to overcome the population crisis.
Currently, South Korea is the only country in the world with a total fertility rate below 1 (0.92 in 2019), classified as an ultra-low birthrate country, facing a population crisis characterized by rapid aging and natural population decline.
Although the government has established and implemented basic plans for a low birthrate and aging society every five years since 2006 for 15 years, the trends of low birthrate and aging have worsened, necessitating nationwide countermeasures.
